11/27/2016 - Added (finally) NHL games for season 2016-2017
08/24/2016 - On Aug 23rd the site was down because of overload. The server got too many requests (too popular I guess). Now there is much more powerful server, and things should be OK again.
05/16/2016 - Fixed dates for Yom Ha'atzmaut.
05/16/2016 - Holiday names in Belgium (French) were in Dutch and vice versa. This applied only to the web, not subscribed calendars. It has been fixed now.

04/10/2016 - Some holidays were moved one day off because Easter date was miscalculated due to change in time zone. This has been fixed and your calendars will be fixed automatically within a couple days.
04/04/2016 - Implemented a throttling mechanism. If the samer user downloads the same calendar more than 10 times per 5 minutes, he'll get a 429 Too Many Request reply for the next 24 hours. Note that normally one should not need to update the calendar for more than once per day, so this limit is very loose. It may be tightened in the future.
04/04/2016 - Improved HTTP response codes when generating calendars.
04/03/2016 - Fixed sunrise & sunset times on front page (they were displayed in a wrong timezone for a few dys)
03/26/2016 - Added Finnish Veikkausliiga matches for season 2016.
03/25/2016 - Webcal.fi server has moved. This had to be done earlier than expected, and it caused downtime on Thursday 24th March. Now everything should be working. The change will not immediately cause changes, but it will enable big changes in the future.
03/07/2016 - Fixed the F1 calendar, which was empty for a while.
01/05/2016 - Deleted the Finnish calendar "Kauppojen aukiolo" (showed when shops are open) because the restrictions were lifted on Jan 1st.
12/08/2015 - Fixed Finnish communal election date from October 2016 to April 2017.
09/26/2015 - Added KHL matches. Note that this requires a lot of manual work and it is unlikely this will continue for the next season. Unless someone can pinpoint a free source where the data is available in an easy to use format.
09/25/2015 - Fixed solar noon in the Sun calendar. Earlier it did not honor the user's time zone.
09/06/2015 - Added option to show solar noon in the Sun calendar. It is not shown by default.

08/07/2015 - Added NHL matches for season 2015-2016.
06/07/2015 - Added icons for moon phases
06/06/2015 - Added zodiac calendar (all languages).
06/06/2015 - After testing with several clients, it seems that calendar applications now support UTF8 characters better. Therefore I changed sunrise from text to ↑ and sunset from text to ↓. Also, zodiac signs also have symbols in them. Please let me know if your client does not support these.
06/06/2015 - Fixed a situation where the biorythm calendar would not display correct data when it was subscribed in the generic English site.
05/02/2015 - Added Ice-Hockey World Championship 2015 games played in Czech Republic. This calendar is in English, but it is available in all countries' pages, under Sports tab.
03/30/2015 - Added holidays from the European Union Commission.
01/24/2015 - Due to my mistake, the Solunar calendars stopped functioning and displayed no data. This has now been fixed and your calendars will again update normally. No actions are needed from you.
01/14/2015 - Changed HTML description of events. No longer should there be extra "\n" characters shown in Outlook.
12/30/2014 - Changed the zenith angle of sunrise/sunset from 90.8333° to 90.5333°. This is the value most other sources use and it takes better into account light refraction in the atmosphere. Nobody needs to update their subscriptions. It will be done automatically in a few days.
12/18/2014 - Added South Africa and South African holidays (calendar in South Africa calendar pages)
12/17/2014 - Fixed a minor problem where the generic flag would not be shown in the website when the user had selected only a language from the menu, not a country. For example, "English (international)". This had no effect on the content, only the flag image.
12/07/2014 - Updated the home arena of each NHL, NFL and NBA team. I didn't realize they change names so often.
12/01/2014 - Fixed problem where sunrise&sunset times would not appear in the calendar when the calendar subscription had been made in the international page (for example, Internatonal English instead of US English).
12/01/2014 - Fixed the order of items in the language menu. Now the internatonal versions are listed last (as they had been earlier). This issue was related with the previous one.
11/13/2014 - Fixed special characters in Sami name days calendar
11/11/2014 - Fixed a problem with calendar cache: for about 10 days, no calendar content was updated, but everything was fetched from the cache. Most users didn't notice anything as calendar events change infrequently. This has now been fixed and no actions are neede from the users.
10/29/2014 - Added a calendar containing important dates for Finnish taxpayers.
10/16/2014 - I've been looking for a reliable way to calculate Moon rise and set times. But that does require knowledge of the user's location, and this in turn would require most users to update their subscriptions for it to work. However, once the new site is ready, there will be some new events in the Moon calendar.
10/16/2014 - The Moon calendar is currently the most popular calendar with about 80,000 users (including all available languages). The Sun calendar is second with 65,000 subscibers. Next come Week numbers (both US and EU) and Weather.
10/15/2014 - I've been working on a full rewrite of all WebCal.fi code. The workload is absolutely huge and will take months to finish. However, it is proceeding well. I'll report to you once there is something to show. But as I have my real work to do as well, this will have to be done in my spare time. At least until WebCal.fi starts generating money :-)
10/15/2014 - If your IOS device shows alarms for WebCal.fi events, they're added by your device, not by WebCal. Check your settings at Settings app > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Scroll almost all the way down for Default Alert Times an open it > Make sure default alarm time for All-Day Events (and possibly Events, especially if you use Sun or Moon calendar) is set to None. Contact me if you have problems.
10/15/2014 - The database behind WebCal.fi gets 550 queries per second (on average).
10/15/2014 - WebCal.fi usage continues its long upward trend. Currently almost 3 million calendar downloads are served each day (over 30 each second). Out of these, about 750,000 are unique (regenerated at request time). The rest are fetched from cache. The server can handle this load, but its limits are approaching again.
10/02/2014 - Fixed a couple minor issues with calendar file validity. I don't know of any client having any problems because of these minor issues. Now all calendars validate 100% with all known validators.
08/31/2014 - Added Russian KHL league hockey matches calendar. Available in English, but visible in all countries' calendar list.
08/12/2014 - Added Finnish Mestis league games for season 2014-2015.

08/11/2014 - Added matches for UK Premier League for season 2014-2015
08/11/2014 - Added the matches for hockey Liiga (Finland) for the next season.
08/10/2014 - Added a calendar for European Athletics (Track & Field) Championships held in Zürich in August. Available in all countries' calendars, but only in English.
08/03/2014 - Some of the FIBA Basketball World Championship games were wrong (USA games were listed as Ukraine games and Korean games as Slovenian). They have all been fixed now and the updated data will appear in your calendars automatically.
07/24/2014 - Added FIBA Basketball World Cup 2014 calendar in the Sports calendars of all languages (the calendar, however, is only available in English). Note that not all games are known at the moment. As the tournament progresses, these matches will be updated.
07/11/2014 - Added a bunch of calendars which contain dates for each day in different calendar systems: bahai, coptic, discordian, ethiopic, french republican, hebrew, islamic, julian, mayan, persian and a couple others. These do not contain holidays (they will be added later as separate calendars).
06/28/2014 - Added Mexican flag days calendar
06/25/2014 - Added Funny Holidays calendar to all countries' pages (but still only in English).
06/25/2014 - Fixed links for many events in Awareness Days, Funny Holidays and UN Observances.
06/22/2014 - Fixed a minor problem with Biorhythm subscription control calendar widget.
06/22/2014 - Fixed a problem where the Finnish work shift calendar would not work with the default settings. Note that the default settings are almost never used as such.
06/21/2014 - Added an error message and options for proceeding when the user tried to view Holiday or Flag day calendar when he had not yet selected a country (only language). Both calendars require a country for which to show the events.
06/21/2014 - Added Flag days calendar for Dutch users.
06/21/2014 - Added Flag Days for Chile
06/21/2014 - Added Flag days for New Zealand.
06/21/2014 - Fixed how event ages are calculated in the Jewish calendar. Earlier the age was relative to the current year, regardless of which year was shown in the calendar.
06/21/2014 - Fixed localization problems from French Canadian dates when selecting a new date from the calendar in the front page. Also, added support for a lot of new countries.
06/21/2014 - Fixed the F1 calendar.
06/21/2014 - Improved the generation of calendars in other formats than iCalendar (such as XML, JSON and PHP array). Also, clarified terms of usage of that data.
06/21/2014 - Minor problems on the morning of 21st June. Some calendars have been delivered empty. They will automatically be updated; no need for users to do anything.
06/16/2014 - Redesigned the front page. Got rid of a lot of clutter.
06/15/2014 - Updated many events in the Funny Holidays calendar and added a lot of new ones.
06/10/2014 - Added URL to each match in the Fifa World Cup calendar. The link in each event will take you directly to the FIFA page for that particular match. As the tournament progresses, the links will be updated for matches whose partisipants we don't yet know.
06/10/2014 - Remove calendar HS OmaKaupunki from the Finnish site. HS seems to have stopped updating the events.
06/04/2014 - Some minor date fixes for many events, mostly in the Funny Holidays calendar.
05/02/2014 - Run out of space on tmp disk. This may have affected calendars generated Friday May 2nd. Now everything is OK again, and if you were affected, the next update will fix everything. Note that I'm not even sure if anybody was really affected by this.
04/29/2014 - Added calendar for Ice Hockey World Championship games in Minsk, Belarus. The calendar is in English, but it is available in all countries' pages.
04/04/2014 - Added option show/not show moon phases, eclipses, perigee & apogee in the Moon calendar. To hide one of these, you should remove your current subscription and make a new one.
04/03/2014 - Added matches to Veikkausliiga season 2014.
03/15/2014 - Fixed the date form Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) in Jewish holidays.
03/11/2014 - Currently there is a problem with updating calendar subscriptions to Windows Live Calendar (including any mobile devices synchronizing calendar subscriptions from there). A lot of tests have been done and there is a very strong suspicion that the problen is with Microsoft's Calendar service. It seems that new subscriptions work well, but existing ones are not updated by Microsoft's service.
03/05/2014 - Added FIFA World Cup games in Brazil. Calendar language is English, but it is available in all countries' pages.
02/27/2014 - Added Mother's Day and Father's Day to calendars in French, from which they were missing.
02/05/2014 - Added alternate names to each Jewish holiday. The alternate names include the name in Hebrew. However, most calendar applications will probably not display the text in Hebrew correctly.
02/05/2014 - Added event alternate names in the tooltip in the calendar subscription page, holidays page and flag days page.
02/04/2014 - Added Jewish holiday Purim Katan (occurs on 14th Adar on Hebrew calendar leap years). In Gregorian calendar it occurs in February about every third year.
02/04/2014 - Fixed the date for Purim in Jewish calendar. Earlier the date for this holiday was one month off when the Hebrew calendar year was a leap year.
01/23/2014 - Added a page where people can download calendar data in many formats (XML, CSV, JSON and PHP serialized array). This page is available in all languages, but for now, the interface is in English only.
01/22/2014 - Updated the way alternate names are handled for events. Now the handling is much better and they're displayed in a better format.
01/21/2014 - Added Good to Know and Holidays calendars for Chile.
01/21/2014 - Updated Italian name day list (Onomastici) to a better one.
01/19/2014 - Added Leap Day event (February 29th every fourth year) to each Good to Know calendar.
01/09/2014 - Added name day calendars and search for name days on the website for the following countries: Spain, France, Italy.
01/09/2014 - Synchronized tabs in different languages. Earlier, the tabs were not identical, and this made updating a hasse. Now the tabs are identical. By identical I mean that the meaning if the label is the same.
01/07/2014 - Added moon and sun perigee and apogee events to contain years 2000-2050.
01/07/2014 - Added solar equinoxes and solstices from 1900 to 2050. Earlier the data extended only until 2018.
01/07/2014 - Removed Good Friday from French holidays (it is not an official holiday in France).
12/04/2013 - Added separate holiday calendars for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (earlier they were all in UK Bank Holidays calendar). Also, removed some holidays from the UK Good to Know calendar.
11/06/2013 - Some modifications in the name day calendars: name days, which are scheduled to become official later, are now not shown in the calendar until they are official. The search page has been modified to indicate if the name day is not yet official.
10/15/2013 - Added Finnish Mestis league to the sports calendars.
10/08/2013 - Fixed the visibility of name day, holiday and flag day visibility in website navigation for countries, which do not have these data available.
10/08/2013 - Made pad devices redirect to the mobile site instead of the normal site. The main reason for this is that the location selection tool (map) does not work well in pads.
10/04/2013 - Changed the mobile version a bit to resize better to mobile screens and to allow the user to change the zoom level.
10/04/2013 - Fixed a small bug where the Weather and Moon calendars displayed the summary event on Jan 1st with an image. This caused the summary details (the most important part) to be invisible in Google Calendar. Also, the image was wrong (it did not apply to that date at all).
10/02/2013 - Starting with iOS 7, Apple started honoring recommended calendar update intervals. Earlier iOS devices downloaded calendars very often, disregarding calendar's recommendations. Now daily downloads are down by 65% because of this. This reduces server load significantly.
10/01/2013 - Fixed a problem where country flags were not displayed on flag days. The events were there, but the flags weren't. This applied mainly to Google Calendar users.
10/01/2013 - Fixed the link on the front page. Earlier, the link "Subcribe Holidays" did not lead to the page where one could subscribe them.
10/01/2013 - Removed the Holidays and Flag days from the navigation in situations where these lists are empty (mainly, when the user has selected only a language, but not a country).
09/20/2013 - Improved automatic recognition of language & country upon arrival. Now almost all users will be automatically redirected to WebCal.fi subsite of their language and culture.
09/17/2013 - An unnoticed bug in the admin pages caused some of the countries/languages not work (the menu simply sent the user back to the default). Also, the automatic redirect based on the user's location and language could send him to a neverending loop of redirects (the browser would fortunately only do a couple of them). This has been fixed now.
09/17/2013 - The login system and password hashing has been redesigned and implemented. For the time being it has no effect on users as user can't sign in and have no need to. This is part of a major uphaul coming up in the future.
09/03/2013 - Earlier some events showed a number of years after the event. This indicated how long it has been since the event, from which the event originated, took place. Now this information has been moved into the description of the event. It is visible by clicking (or double-clicking) on the event.
08/30/2013 - Had to reduce the visibility of the Sun and Solunar calendars to 1 month in the past and 1 year in the future. This was because these calendars are by far the biggest and require longest time to generate. Before the change, the largest ones were 7 megabytes and contained over 6000 events. Most of these were not ever seen by anybody (the calendar got updated before that).
08/30/2013 - Now, when the server is overloaded, new calendars will not be generated. 99% of downloaded calendars are NOT generated on the fly, but fetched from a cache. This change will not affect any normal operation, but some database cleanups will cause overloads. Now they are handled better than before.
08/28/2013 - Fixed a problem in the Sun calendar. Some solar eclipses were not shown at all (most clients), or were shown at the wrong times (few clients). The calendars will update automatically within a couple days (no changed needed by the user).
08/27/2013 - Updated the game schedules for NHL, NBA, NFL, Premier League, SM-liiga, Veikkausliiga (all available sports calendars). Now all matches are up-to-date for season 2013-2014. No changes needed in your subscriptions.
08/21/2013 - Almost 100 new names were added in the Finnish name day calendar, as listed by University of Helsinki. These changes take effect immediately, although officially these new names appear from year 2015 onwards.
07/03/2013 - Added flag images for flag days in the popups with events. When you click on the "xx events" links on the calendar subscription page, you see them.
06/20/2013 - Added Supermoon in Moon calendar. A supermoon occurs when a new or full moon happens at the same time as perigeum (moon closest to Earth). Next ones will be June 23rd and July 22nd.
04/05/2013 - Fixed a minor problem where the language of a calendar was incorrectly indicated. This information is very seldom used for anything and it is very unlikely the error really affected anybody.
04/05/2013 - Fixed a problem where some of the Ice Hockey World Championship games where displayed at the wrong time. This problem affected only MS Outlook (The calendar file was valid but Outlook interpreted it differently from other clients).
03/28/2013 - Fixed some IE8-issues in calendar subscription page. Now everything works even with IE8.
03/27/2013 - Added an option for the user to select the status of calendar events in calendars Holidays and Flag days. The status is either Free, Busy, Tentative or Out of office, the default being Free. Currently it is visible in all languages, but the text is in English.
03/18/2013 - Added Men's Ice Hockey World Championship 2013 calendar. Unlike earlier, this time it is in English and available in all countries' pages.
03/17/2013 - Added a way for users to rename the location selected on the map for Sun, Solunar, Weather and Golden Hour calendars.
03/17/2013 - Added Christian calendar (currently only in English). Moved some Christian events from Good to know calendar to the new Christian calendar.
03/12/2013 - Fixed a prolem, which mainly affected Sun calendar (others, too, but to a much lesser extent). Some events were off and the calendar file was formatted incorrectly. Some clients may not have been able to display anything at all.
03/11/2013 - Fixed a problem with determining user's IP address (the IP address is used to determine location for Sun calendar for example). The problem affected very few users.
03/10/2013 - Reduced the calendar maximum length of Sun and Soluncar calendar to 6 months due to the load they're causing on the server. Also, 2-year calendars are almost 10 megabytes in size and most of this data is never seen.
03/05/2013 - Added tooltips to events with more information (mostly holidays), in both regular and mobile Today pages.
03/05/2013 - Quite a bit of modifications in the mobile pages, but mostly under the hood (not directly visible).
03/04/2013 - Fixed color selection and some user interface issues in the mobile version.
03/03/2013 - Added "Today" page in the mobile pages, all languages.
03/03/2013 - Added a bunch of new events in the Funny holidays calendar (English and Finnish)
02/21/2013 - Changed the sorting of most popular calendars in the first tab of calendars page. Now it is smater in determining which calendars are actually more popular.
02/21/2013 - Fixed a couple minor bugs in Finnish work shift calendar.
02/21/2013 - Made the background lighter when popup windows are open.
02/16/2013 - Fixed slow loading map in Firefox on the calendar subscription page.
02/12/2013 - Some software updates today on Feb 12th. Very short breaks expected.
02/12/2013 - The Moon calendar did not contain apogees and perigees for 2013. Now these events are included again. The new events will be automatically updated to all involved.
02/09/2013 - Added Chinese new year in Good to know calendar in all languages. Unlike its Western counterpart, the Chinese new year is shown as time-specific event. This is because the Chinese new year may take place in different days depending on the time zone.
02/05/2013 - Updated the colors of almost all calendars. Most changes are minor.
02/04/2013 - Added an option to select the color of all calendars in all languages.
02/02/2013 - Added work shift calendar for all languages (under Personal tab). The translations are now from Google translator, so they may be inaccurate. Please let me know if they need to be changed.
01/31/2013 - Updated the work shift calendars (in Finnish only). Now the 6-shift versions show correct work shifts, too. This update changed the whole way the calendars are created and it affects all work shift calendars. But the users should not notice anything else changed. Please let me know if something went wrong with the update.
01/31/2013 - Working on a better implementation of work shift calendar (Finnish only). This caused a short break in the calendar content, which has now been fixed.
01/24/2013 - I had to re-implement restrictions on how many downloads are allowed. This applies only to certain users of Mozilla Lightning. There is a bug in the client which causes constant re-downloads of calendar content, up to 300,000 times every day. Please make sure your client does not do this. Better yet, upgrade to less buggy software.
01/22/2013 - Some more optimization and performance improvements on Jan 22nd. Short breaks expected.
01/22/2013 - The optimization took much longer than expected and in the end didn't even work as I hoped. The outage took about 5 hours. Everything has been working for 10 hours now.
01/21/2013 - Fixed a minor bug which caused incorrect number format in some non-US locales in Weather calendar.
01/04/2013 - After New Year we're getting lots of new downloads. About 4 million today. Still, this should not be noticeable in server performance. But soon we need better hardware and we'll be forced to get some income from this site, not just expenses.
12/05/2012 - Some more changes in the cache. Caused short outages today (Dec 5th). They're over now.
12/03/2012 - Fixed a problem with displaying Japanese characters in calendars as "?????". Now they are displayed correctly (if the calendar application supports UTF-8).
11/21/2012 - Made some changes on the caching routines and database. There were short outages today (Nov 21st), but now thing should be normal again. The performance of the site is a bit higher, but that is soon overridden by more users.
10/28/2012 - Moved all all-day events on April 1st, 2013 to noon of that same day. The reason for this is a bug on the iPad. If there is an all-day event on April 1st, the calendar crashes when viewing March 2013 on Monthly view. Apple has not fixed this in almost a year now.
10/19/2012 - Fixed a small problem with week number icons in Google Calendar.
09/22/2012 - Changed the way subscriptions are recognized and handled. This will require nothing from users, but it does cause quite a bit of extra load on the server for a few hours. So there will be maintenance breaks today on Saturday September 22nd.
09/22/2012 - Fixed a bug with Jan 1st status events. Earlier most of them never updated. Now this should be fixed. It may take up to a week for the events to be updated.
08/26/2012 - Changed the user inteface of the location selection in Sun, Weather and Solunar calendars. Now the function of the buttons should be clearer.
07/27/2012 - Fixed a problem with calendar content length header, which caused problems with avast! anti-virus software web protection module.
06/29/2012 - Fixed a problem where the new URLs in calendar events stopped working. Some of the current URLs will go a wrong page until the calendar is refreshed, which normally happens within a couple days.
06/27/2012 - A lot of changed under the hood. This caused short outages on Tuesday. Everything is running fine and dandy again. The changes allow easier localization and maintenance. Mostly they should not be noticeable to users.
06/27/2012 - Added possibility to select a date on the front page
06/27/2012 - All calendars contain a new event. On January 1st there will be a status event which shows the status of the subscription: how often it is updated, calendar size, subscription address etc. It can be used to verify that automatic updates are working.
06/27/2012 - Changed the way users are redirected from the front page to language and region specific pages. Now it honors the browser's accept-language, instead of relying solely on IP location. IP location is still used as a support when the browser does not specify a region.
06/22/2012 - Added HS Omakaupunki, which contains various events around Helsinki, Finland.
06/21/2012 - Improved handling of holidays observed on Friday/Monday when they fall on Saturday/Sunday. Applies mostly to UK and US holidays.
06/21/2012 - Made several small changes to improve security. These changes are not visible to normal users.
06/13/2012 - 120 gigabytes of calendars downloaded every day. WebCal.fi has about 300 000 users with calendar subscriptions.
06/13/2012 - Downloads continue to increase steadily and rapidly. Downloads increase by 15% every month, doubling every 5 months. Currently there are 10 million downloads a week, 1.5 million a day. 1000 calendar downloads every minute.
06/12/2012 - Did significant changes in the server configuration. This should not be visible to the users at all, but makes management simpler, especially adding new languages.
06/11/2012 - Added handling for more complex holiday rules, such as New Zealand Christmas Mondayification.
06/11/2012 - Added New Zealand holidays
